We are unapologetic fans – diehard fans tbh – of putting rugs in kitchens.
Why?
First and foremost, kitchen rugs are comforting for the feet, especially in the winter months when people tend to nest at home and cook more.
Secondly, when you get the right rug for your kitchen, it will instantly change the look and vibe of the room and make it feel more complete. In general, rugs are like a good pair of shoes because like shoes can make an outfit, a rug can really pull a room together. Nowhere is this more true than in the kitchen, an area of the home where floors are commonly woefully bare of decoration. Furthermore, a rug will style a kitchen so it looks good despite dated tile and overhead lighting that is unfortunately there to stay until your budget allows for a renovation.
The kitchen gets a lot of traffic and life happens so we all expect spills here, so we suggest choosing forgiving colors and patterns. Our personal favorites are vintage tribal rugs, such as Kazaks or Persians because they have a perfect, worn-in look that helps hide stains and general wear and tear. There are also really great washable, non-vintage options that eliminate the fear of total destruction and make your kitchen look like a million bucks.
Here is our roundup of our recent favorite Thursday finds….
Before we sign off, here are some practical kitchen rug tips:
- Rug tape is key so that you can keep the rug from sliding around.
- Choose a thick rug pad underneath so people’s feet feel like they are stepping on a soft buttery cloud (which is much deserved when chopping onions).
- Washable rugs are overall easy to care for; however, excessive washing may result in a premature breakdown of the fibers so for small spills or stains, blot the area using warm water and mild detergent in between washes to prolong the rug’s life.
- Go big or go home – in other words, pick a kitchen rug that covers 75% of the flooring area. Small rugs look dinky and small-minded.
