Creating a Guest Bedroom People Will Love in 7 Easy Steps

If you’re getting ready to welcome overnight guests for the holidays and (gulp) want to know how to prepare a beautiful and comfortable space they’ll jump for joy over, today we’re sharing some easy decorating ideas to help you create an inviting guest bedroom your family and friends will adore.

So here’s the magic formula for getting it just right….

1. Start with the essentials – a high-quality mattress and bedding

The absolute two essentials you need to get right are both a dreamy mattress and high quality white bedsheets and duvet cover. Put some thought and money into what mattress you choose because it’s the difference between your guests being happy or grumpy. A mattress can go either way so don’t ever cheap out on a mattress; instead think of it as in investment in guest happiness, whether you own an Airbnb and care about your ROI or just care about your family and friends’ happiness when visiting you.  We love this one because it’s organic, conforms to any body type, and sleeps cool.

Second to a dreamy mattress is dreamy bedding. The goal is for guests to say “what bedding is this, I want it!” Choose something that feels really good against skin. We are fans of Bellino’s Hotel Line, which is favored by boutique hotels around the world. Oh, and we cannot forget to mention bed pillows – provide two bed pillows per guest, one firm and one soft so guests can choose one to their liking.

2. One nightstand (or surface) and one reading light per guest

This seems obvious but you would be shocked at how many guest bedrooms lack either a nightstand (or surface on which to put belongings) or reading light for each guest. I think the thinking (or lack of thinking lol) is that providing only one of the these elements is all guests need, which could not be further from the truth. EACH guest needs both a table lamp or wall sconce for reading, writing, or smart device use and a surface on which to put their belongings.

3. Rug under the bed or near the bed

A rug makes a bedroom cozy. Period. It literally grounds the bedroom, making it instantly approachable and cozy. Guests like a soft surface to put their feet upon in all seasons.

4. Black-out curtains or shades

This is a necessity in vacation homes and Airbnbs and a “really great thing to have period” in residential bedrooms. Blocking out outside light increases both deep and REM sleep, which in turn leads to a higher quality of life, so don’t skip this step.

5. Decorative pillows on the bed

A bedroom looks so much more complete with decorative pillows on the bed. We aren’t talking overloading the bed either; rather just adding some color and pattern on a bedscape. They complete the room and add the “wow!” element.

6. Bedside accessories that people appreciate

A water carafe, smart device charging unit, tissue box, some books, and a tray or catch-all are items guests really appreciate by the bed. It’s the little things in life that guests notice and appreciate and are so easy to provide. Read this post for more details.

7. Last but not least – the luggage rack or bench at the bottom of the bed

Because you have invested in beautiful bedding, the last thing you want is guests slinging a dirty suitecase on the bed so head them off at the pass by providing a luggage rack or two; alternatively, if you have the space, put a bench at the bottom of the bed (with a hardy performance fabric or leather).
