There are few things in life as relaxing and reinvigorating as a week by the ocean. The coast is a guaranteed peaceful place to hang out, which is why we fill our up coolers and grab the hot new beach read to spend the day there with family and friends. So logically, one would correctly conclude that coastal design would make us feel happy and relaxed. Between the salty breezes, vibrant sunsets, and the sounds of waves crashing at your feet, the coast creates an inner peace impossible to beat.
Known for its cool, laidback aesthetic, coastal design is the epitome of a relaxed lifestyle. It calls for classic coastal hues- blues, white, green, and hints of pink or orange. Add native treasures like shells, driftwood, wicker, or woven rattan. The goal is to create a light and airy atmosphere that’s as relaxing as a day at the beach. It’s about creating a space that exudes calm energy and invites you in to sit and linger. When all the pieces come together, it feels as though you booked a one-way ticket to paradise.

The colors blue and white (with touches of pink and sand)
Blues and whites together are suggestive of the beach or the coast. When we think of that perfect day at the beach, we think of a big blue sky, a big blue body of water, white wave crests and foam, as well as occasional white puffy clouds sailing by. These colors will remind you of those long days of summer at the beach.
Equally present, but less dominant, are the colors pink and orange. Think of the peachy pinks of a beach sunset or the inside of a conch shell. They naturally marry into blue and white to convey a coastal feel.
Wicker and rattan
We wrote a blog post recently on wicker and rattan. They are hardy materials that last ages and always go with a coastal look. Not to mention, they never go out of style. Mirrors, trays, furniture, candle holders, lighting, placemats, picture frames, you name it.
Natural materials typically found at the beach
Shells, rocks, and driftwood wood pieces can be used as decor items for a beachy look. We use them plentifully in our coastal designs.
Artwork depicting coastal settings
This is an obvious one, but must be stated anyway. It’s literal. If you stare at an oil painting of the Big Sur Coast, a part of you feels transported there. We especially love vintage paintings, but pastels, ink drawings, and photographs of beach scenes are great too.
Indoor plants
Coastal decor should include plants because beaches and coasts are scattered with them. Ferns, succulents, and tropical flowers are all good choices.
